Back pain is an equal opportunity ailment. Nine out of ten people will suffer from it in a lifetime, and five out of ten adults experience back pain every year. Much more than a collection of bones, the human spine is a complicated network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, all of which can cause pain.

The Spine Centers at Sinai and Northwest Hospital of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain & Spine Institute have teams of specialists trained in all aspects of spinal disorders, whether the cause is trauma, illness or aging. From simple physical therapy to the most advanced surgical procedures, the Spine Centers at Sinai and Northwest Hospital are the region's leading resource for neck and back related problems.

Back Pain

Symptoms

Back pain symptoms are as varied as their causes. The pain may be dull, sharp, piercing or burning. It may occur constantly or intermittently. It might stay localized or it might radiate to other areas such as the extremities. And it can include other symptoms such as weakness, numbness or tingling. Whatever variant of back pain you may have, the Spine Centers can help.

Diagnostics

Spine Center patients are diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team. Specialists in neurosurgery, orthopedics, physiatry, radiology, physical therapy and interventional pain management will assess your condition. These experts have access to the most advanced diagnostic tools available including MRI, CT scan, diagnostic injection procedures, myelography, ultrasound, and EMG and nerve conduction studies.

Treatments

Based upon your diagnosis, the Spine Center specialists will recommend a comprehensive course of treatment to help eliminate pain, restore maximum function and resume normal activities. Conservative non-surgical therapies may be recommended, such as injections, oral medications and physical and occupational therapy. If surgical intervention is required, the Spine Centers offer the most sophisticated therapies from bone cement injections to advanced reconstructive techniques.
